International Improvisation Contest René Arons

On the 1st and 2nd of February 2019, the second edition of the 'International Improvisation Competition René Arons' will be organized. This competition is organized in memory of René Arons, pianist, improviser and beloved teacher.

Different prizes between € 300 and € 500, are awarded and the 'Aronskelk prize' is awarded to the most authentic and creative improvisation. This symbolic prize is a sculpture in the shape of an arum lily.

The competition is open to all musicians younger than 30. You can participate as a soloist or in any formation. All styles are allowed: strictly tonal, modal, free style, jazz, .... The candidates will have to present at least two improvisations, one of which will be an instant improvisation on a given theme.

Submit the following to Yves Senden to conquer your place in de contest (in case of duos or ensembles: one for every participating musician):

  • name
  • date of birth
  • email address
  • telephone number (please include your country calling code for non-Belgian telephone
  • numbers)
  • curriculum vitae
  • a unedited video of a group improvisation (maximum duration: 10 minutes; file size must not exceed 2GB)

Shortly after the International Improvisation Competition René Arons free workshops are organized to introduce students to different perspectives and approaches to improvising in a few concentrated workshops. These sessions are open to everyone.
