MASTERCLASS Suzanne Ciani

The day after her concert at DE SINGEL, Suzanne Ciani explains her working methods to students from the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp and the public. On behalf of the Belgian electronic music scene, Lennart Heyndels talks to her and then gives this leading lady of synthesiser music free rein in a real patch session in a quadraphonic sound experience.

Suzanne Ciani, a pioneer of electronic music, made a name for herself with her virtuoso mastery of the Buchla synthesiser. In the 1970s and 1980s, she composed not only experimental works, but also iconic commercials and film music. Her electronic “whoosh” for Coca-Cola became world famous, and she even designed the sounds for Bally pinball machines. Ciani combines technology and poetry, proving that electronic music can also have warmth and humour. With her visionary approach, she gives electronic music a human face and inspires generations of musicians.
