In memoriam: Jacques De Tiège

The Royal Conservatoire Antwerp is saddened to learn of the passing of Jacques De Tiège yesterday.

For decades, Jacques was associated with the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp as principal study teacher piano. Not only did his work help shape the character of our school, he also trained top pianists such as Eliane Rodrigues, Robert Groslot, Yuja Wang, Sylvia Traey and Librecht Vanbeckevoort. A few years ago, Leif Ove Andsnes commented on his teacher as follows: "I call him an alchemist of the piano. He always amazes me because he understands exactly how playing the piano physically works."

As a teacher, he coached several generations of piano teachers, a number of whom are now affiliated with the Antwerp Royal Conservatoire as teachers, researchers or artistic directors. Artistic Director Koen Kessels reacts: "In the two years that I studied with him, I learned so much, as a pianist, musician and human being. A memorable man." Eliane Rodrigues : "He was a very special man and gifted teacher. Forever in our hearts and in our music."

We will remember forever how inspiring and gifted Jacques was as a coach and teacher.

Our thoughts are with Jacques De Tiège's family and friends, as well as with our own staff who will continue to honour him with the utmost respect for his legacy in their work and their music.
