This artistic research project identifies and examines the defining characteristics of flamenco with the aim of creating a meaningful fusion between jazz and flamenco. Flamenco has long been recognized by jazz musicians as the Spanish counterpart of American blues, and meaningful parallels between the two traditions can indeed be drawn. Yet for non-Spanish jazz musicians unfamiliar with traditional flamenco practice, such a fusion is far from self-evident.
The research centers on an in-depth exploration of the intersections and divergences between flamenco and jazz, working toward a fully realized artistic integration in which the essential identity of both idioms remains clearly present. The project is thus a search for concrete, practice-based methodologies: hands-on artistic experience, combined with the translation of acquired insights into jazz terminology and notation, forms the foundation for both artistic performance and a broader study framework.
The culminating outcome is a live performance in a cross-over format, bringing together jazz and flamenco musicians. The repertoire draws on traditional flamenco forms alongside original compositions and arrangements of existing works.
The insights developed throughout the process were disseminated through workshops and a video blog charting the evolution of the research.
