Stephanie Friede

Stephanie Friede, one of the most in demand international Sopranos, was born in New York City and is a graduate of Julliard and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

Important appearances during the last years include: „Minnie“ in Puccini’s LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST, e.g. at the New National Theatre, Tokyo, the New York City Opera, at the Vlaamse Opera, Antwerpen, at the Zurich Opera and at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Stephanie Friede has appeared regularly at the Zurich Opera e.g.as „Minneleide“ in Pfitzner’s ROSE VOM LIEBESGARTEN, in the title role of Strauss’ SALOME (under Valery Gergiev), „Sieglinde“ in DIE WALKÜRE and „Brünnhilde“ in SIEGFRIED (Franz Welser–Möst / Robert Wilson).
The Deutsche Oper Berlin invited her for „Madeleine“ in Giordanos ANDRÉ CHENIER, „Sieglinde“ in DIE WALKÜRE (Christian Thielemann), „Marietta“ in Korngold’s DIE TOTE STADT. At the Gran Teatro del Liceu Stephanie Friede made her debut with Philipp Boesmann’s WINTERMÄRCHEN (Co- production with La Monnaie, Bruxelles) and was re-invited to sing „Marietta“ in DIE TOTE STADT. At the Grand théâtre de Genève the artist sang the title-role of Puccini’s MANON LESCAUT as well as „Katarina Ismailova“ in LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK. Marcello Viotti invited Stephanie Friede for several very important and very successful concert performances with the Munich Radio Orchestra e.g. Puccini’s IL TABARRO und SUOR ANGELICA, and Cilea’s ARLESIANA. Further guest appearances: Schulhoff’s FLAMMEN at the Wiener Festwochen (Bertrand de Billy/ Keith Warner), the title–role of Gerald Barry’s THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT at the English National Opera (The Independent: „It’s the music and Stephanie Friede’s vocal prowess in the demanding title role that gave this stage premiere its clout“), „Cio-cio san“ in MADAMA BUTTERFLY at the Semperoper Dresden, „Wanda“ in SOPHIE’S CHOICE at Covent Garden, London (Simon Rattle), „Amelia“ in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA at the Hamburg State Opera, the title-role in SALOME (Fabio Luisi) with the MDR Radio Orchestra as well as „Chrysothemis“ in ELEKTRA at the Teatro dell’opera Roma and invitations to the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the Opéra de Bastille Paris, Göteborgs Operan, the Opera North, Leeds, the Miami Grand Opera, the Nationale Reisopera, the Dusseldorf opera and the Cincinatti Opera. She collaborated with conductors such as: Christian Thielemann, Fabio Luisi, Franz Welser-Möst, Bertrand de Billy, Mark Elder, Ulf Schirmer, Simon Rattle, Kurt Masur, Riccardo Chailly, Valery Gergiev, Marcello Viotti and many others.

Besides her performances at leading opera houses the artist devotes a big part of her time singing concerts e.g. Mahler’s 8. Symphony under Riccardo Chailly at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Shostakovich’s 14. Symphony in Zürich, Janaceck’s GLAGOLITIC MASS with the Halle Orchestra under Mark Elder, Beethoven’s 9. Symphony under Kurt Masur with the London Philharmonic Orchestra to name some.
