Elizabeth and Albert

This research project aims to fill the gap in musicological research on composer Albert Huybrechts. Apart from the personal life memories of his brother Jacques, there is no serious study about this important Belgian composer.

The research starts from the event around the Coolidge prize, which Huybrechts wins in 1926 for his sonata for violin and piano. After the award, Huybrechts and Coolidge meet in Brussels but something goes wrong between them. Later Mrs Coolidge distances himself from him and says that it was a mistake to award him the prize. The research wants to summarize and publish the correspondence between Coolidge and Huybrechts.

Andrew Wise wants to translate the French-language memoirs of his brother Jacques Huybrechts into English and provide a musicological introduction. He wants to offer this introduction as an article in the English specialist literature. Wise also wants to prepare concerts by teachers and students of the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp with music by Huybrechts and contemporaries. He wants to organize a number of lecture recitals to give an idea of the importance of the Coolidge prize for chamber music in the 20's and 30's of the 20th century.
