Until today the double bass is still not acknowledged as a chamber music or solo instrument. Yet remarkable compositions for double bass solo can be found. This project wants to fill this void by giving the Flemish repertoire the necessary publicity by an extensive study, by publishing manuscripts, by performing the pieces and by recording the most interesting compositions by Lode Leire. This research wants to provide a detailed catalogue which will contain the data of the composer and composition, duration of the composition, publication or location of the manuscript, difficulty, particular techniques used to play the composition and so on. In addition, the techniques will be mapped and on this basis, this study will examine how these different techniques stabilized or evolved through the years. “Er staat een contrabas in de gang” wants to put the Flemish repertoire for double bass solo on the map as a general overview study in Flanders and abroad. This project wants to position the Flemish double bass music against what can be found internationally.
