This project focuses on the development and mapping of a practice-based implementation method for contemporary music, tailored to higher art education. From practice - by giving lectures, workshops, courses and lessons - Ine Vanoeveren experienced an urgent need for a practice-oriented, written document. Students, lecturers, composers and performing musicians should be able to use this document as a reference book during the preparations of contemporary projects and as course material for contemporary music lessons. The current handbooks and reference works on contemporary music mainly focus on one aspect: either writing or extended techniques for a particular instrument. A general method that is useful for musicians as well as for composers, is not yet available.
While writing this document, Vanoeveren doesn’t aim to present a theoretical summary of a contemporary execution method, but wants to offer a practical guideline in order to improve the relationship between performing musician, composer and contemporary writing. She aims to do this by describing rhythmical clarifications and far-reaching microtonality, by providing tips for score preparations, etc… She sees manuals such as Extended Notation: The de-fiction of the unconventional by Christian Dimpker as examples, because in addition to a clear explanation, they provide a lot of source and illustrative material.
