Studium Generale 2020-2021 on PRIVACY

On ten Tuesday evenings, spread over the academic year, students, lecturers and a wider audience are invited for refreshing reflections and an enriching dialogue. In academic year 2020-2021, the lecture series Studium Generale will focus on the theme of PRIVACY.

Privacy is a universal human right. Not only your personal data, but also your autonomy and integrity are protected by it. The right to privacy is a prerequisite for all other human rights and is part of the Belgian constitution and European regulations. But our privacy is facing an increasing amount of threats.

In the fight against crime and terrorism, privacy is too often used as a bargaining chip. Just think of smart ANPR cameras that record our daily activities on the street, the digital fingerprint on our identity card, the data retention law that obliges telecom companies to keep our communications data on record. What's more, we voluntarily throw our personal data away in exchange for the convenience or entertainment of seemingly innocent digital applications. For many companies, that data is worth its weight in gold.

Why do we do that? And do we really have 'nothing to hide'? What price are we prepared to pay for the protection of our safety, our health? How secure are our data in the hands of companies and governments? Ten fascinating speakers with various expertise bring the theme of PRIVACY to light from sometimes very unexpected angles.

More about the lecture series

Every year, the Studium Generale lecture series deals with a specific, socially relevant theme. We invite ten speakers to take the floor and share their personal experiences, findings and reflections on the theme and their ideas for the future with the audience. With this lecture series, AP University College aims to encourage participants to reflect on current issues. Interdisciplinarity and social relevance are key in this respect.

The lectures are open for free upon reservation and will be held in Dutch or English. Each lecture is followed by a short debate with the audience. All lectures take place at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp.
