Following the release of his album ‘fold/unfold/refold’, Piergiorgio Pirro continues his exploration of the dialogue—or clash—between jazz and spectral music, and brings together a new quintet, featuring the boundary-pushing vocalist Lynn Cassiers.
Pioneered by composers like Gérard Grisey and Tristan Murail, spectral music emerged as an influential movement in the 1970s and 80s. Spectral composers drew inspiration from the physics of sound, challenging our common perception of musical parameters.
In his research, Pirro applies spectral techniques to a small jazz band, where players continuously negotiate extemporaneous acts of co-creation with composition. Exploring the possibilities of spectral techniques in improvisation, he fosters a discussion on shared and perceived values of jazz music.
