Saxophonist, electronic artist, singer, composer, researcher, and educator, Nicolas Kummert has been described as a “poet of the saxophone” and praised for his “patience and willingness to explore the unknown”. These qualities reflect the core of his musical approach: openness, receptivity and a deep curiosity toward sound, interaction, and improvisation.
Over a career spanning more than 25 years, Nicolas has recorded over 80 albums and performed more than 2000 concerts worldwide. He has led projects featuring artists such as Lionel Loueke and Jeff Ballard, including DRIFTER, Nicolas Kummert Voices, SYM, and Respire!, while also collaborating with Jef Neve, Pierre Van Dormael, Diederik Wissels, Ana Rocha, and Slowly Rolling Camera, among many others.
His latest album, La diversité, released on Edition Records, features a variable-geometry ensemble with Lionel Loueke.
Following a two-year artistic research project at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp exploring the interaction between improvising musicians and a human-controlled electronic modulation system, Nicolas is now developing a new research project centred on hybrid reinterpretations of the music of Jean-Philippe Rameau.
