Naughty Kids. Punk and the disruptive figuration around the Academy 1978-./.-2018

As a product of the Antwerp Baroque that is alive and kicking, The Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp wants to actively participate in the manifestation Antwerp Baroque 2018. She wants to do this by approaching the historical phenomena of iconoclasm and baroque from a contemporary and contrarian perspective.

We hereby use the principle that the Punk movement of the late 1970's can be interpreted as a late 20th century iconoclasm, while the postmodern figuration of that period is closely related to aspects of the baroque. Both have played an important role in the Antwerp art and design scene and its traces can still be found today.

We bring together both storms/streams: the Beeldenstorm of the Antwerp Punk (1978/1988) and the Disruptive figuration of the Academy (1968/2018), in an exciting and confrontational exhibition in the beautiful Lange Zaal where music, fashion, graphic design and visual art enter into a dialogue and debate.

In addition, a site specific work is shown extra muros in the baroque Sint-Pauluskerk. In the context of Naughty Kids, we also provide a stimulating program with conversations, performances and concerts.
