Anton Zhdanovich (Anton Ždanovič) is a marimba and percussion artist with an international solo career, as well as an orchestral performer and researcher. His artistic practice closely aligns with his research interests and is devoted to the exploration of instrumental sonority, sound colour, and expressive potential, with a particular focus on developing an individual and musically grounded approach to marimba and percussion performance. Zhdanovich developed artistically in Czechia, Italy, and Belgium. As a marimba and percussion soloist, he has performed with orchestras such as the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava (Czechia), Sichuan Symphony Orchestra (China), Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra (Spain), and Prague Philharmonia (Czechia), among other esteemed ensembles. His concert activity spans a broad international context, including performances across Europe and Asia.
Alongside his solo career, Zhdanovich has been actively engaged in orchestral and large-scale performance projects, collaborating with internationally renowned musicians such as Semyon Bychkov, Manfred Honeck, Jiří Bělohlávek, Andrea Bocelli, Ennio Morricone, Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, and John Patitucci. This experience has played a significant role in shaping his artistic voice, musical sensibility, and research trajectory.
Since 2018, Zhdanovich has been a doctoral researcher in the arts at the University of Antwerp, affiliated with the Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts (ARIA). In 2018–2019, he undertook an ERASMUS traineeship at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, working as an assistant to Professor Ludwig Albert in individual marimba lessons and marimba chamber music, while initiating a reflective analysis of pedagogical approaches that later informed theexperimental framework of his doctoral research.
Zhdanovich’s doctoral thesis focuses on the application of a pianistic approach to marimba performance, exploring inter-instrumental transfer, musical expression, phrasing, touch, articulation, and expressive refinement as pedagogical tools within contemporary marimba practice and research.
