The Royal Conservatoire Antwerp and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (the two Schools of Arts of AP Hogeschool) develop their research policy in close collaboration.
The essence of the research is artistic. The research questions come about through an explicit definition of the research dimension that is already present in the practice of an artist (and in art schools). The research process also influences that artistic praxis itself and the output takes at least partly an artistic form. The aim of integrating artistic practice and research is present in the training program: from bachelor through master to researcher and PhD candidate, from student to lecturer. The interaction between education, research, social services and the development and practice of the arts is seen as an important tool for developing expertise and constantly innovating both education and research.
At the Schools of Arts there are four types of research projects for which funding can be applied for: there is an annual call for start projects, one-year research projects, two-year research projects and four-year PhD projects.
The research projects have a link with one or more research groups of the Academy and/or the Conservatoire. At this moment, eight research groups have been formed around specific fields of expertise.
More than 40 new research projects start at the Schools of Arts each year.
Output artistic research
The output of the artistic research and the nexus with education takes various forms:
- The researchers organize a wide range of research activities, from concerts, performances and exhibitions, to lectures, presentations and work sessions.
- Research in the arts often results in theoretical and / or artistic publications.
- The Schools of Arts curate a programme in which research in the arts is opened up to colleagues, students and / or a wider audience (ARTICULATE, Research Weeks, NextDoors, Soup Sessions, Research Seminars,...).
