Els Vanden Meersch

Els Vanden Meersch makes photographs, sculptures and installations as portraits in which architecture plays a central role. For Vanden Meersch, architecture is the work area of memory. A building is a reflection of a mentality or an ideological foundation. This does not primarily concern the historical representation of architectural styles in their cultural context, but rather the emotional impact that buildings have from their past on the viewer.

The works of Els Vanden Meersch are 'psychotopologies'. She shows the emotional load of architecture both in anonymous buildings and in historically heavily loaded places. Just as feelings of uneasiness teach us that we can not just detach ourselves from our own past, the psychological impact of architecture shows that we can not separate ourselves from our cultural past.
