Resisting repertoire. Strategieën voor een grotere genderbalans in repertoiretheater

In this project researcher and actress Lauranne Paulissen develops strategies to achieve a greater gender balance in dramatic repertoire. Without a notable adaptation of content and the size and meaning of women’s roles, dramatic repertoire faces major problems from a gender perspective. The goal of this research is to develop concrete guidelines for directors, actors, teachers and students on how to overcome this gender disbalance.

In this project, both existing and new tools will be studied and developed. There will be an in-depth investigation of earlier strategies focusing on gender balance in repertoire. The current efforts of the drama education at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp to counter this problem will also be included. In search of good practices, the creative process of three performers/directors/theatre collectives that will work with dramatic repertoire during the 2020-2021 season, will be observed. The methods developed will be tested and adapted in an artistic process, with a theatre performance as a final result.

‘Resisting repertoire’ aims to create awareness regarding the gender disbalance issue, to create room for more interesting female roles and to make a more nuanced gender representation possible.
