SAX V2.0

The research project SAX v2.0 examines how a breath controller can be built into a 'real' saxophone. It is the first phase of a project that aims to create a technologically advanced saxophone where the added functionality does not interfere with the original acoustic qualities of the saxophone, nor affect the playing comfort of the performing musician.

More specifically, the EWI (electric wind instrument) will be built into a 'real saxophone'. An EWI is a so-called breath controller that is known as 'the electric saxophone' but does not produce any acoustic sound. This way a 'hybrid' instrument is formed that combines the best of two worlds and could considerably broaden the sound palette of the modern saxophonist without losing the acoustic sound, techniques and details of the original instrument.
