Photography is a rapidly changing medium with a direct social link and relevance. After all, as a photographer you stand in the centre of the world and you work with reality. The photography department of the Royal Academy of Antwerp trains the image makers of tomorrow by familiarizing them with the technical, conceptual and aesthetic aspects of the medium of photography.
A passionate team of professional photographers with international careers, and experienced teachers in photo-technique and photographic history challenges you to develop a subjective and critical attitude towards visual culture and contemporary art.
Photography is both craft and communication. A thorough understanding of the photographic métier and its history, of its visual codes, symbols and metaphors, allows you to take a critical position in our complex society through images.
You work intensively around creating, presenting and interpreting photos. A personal, authentic interpretation by the maker is always central. Your teachers stimulate an open dialogue between personalities so that you can determine and defend your position yourself. By regularly offering lectures and workshops by internationally renowned photographers and artists, the Photography programme maintains strong relations with the professional field. In addition, we work closely with photo festivals such as Breda Photo, galleries and museums such as FOMU.
