Lecture - The structure of sound: Portrait of Karel Goeyvaerts

Lecture by Mark Delaere (in English)

Antwerp-based Karel Goeyvaerts (1923-93) is regarded as the most important Flemish composer of the last century. He owes this reputation to the fact that he, together with Stockhausen and Boulez, stood at the cradle of serial and electronic music in the beginning of the 1950s. This lecture provides insight into the most important compositional and aesthetic principles of Goeyvaerts' serial works (No. 1 to No. 7). Then the experimental, aleatory and repetitive techniques that Goeyvaerts applied in the period 1960-1985 are discussed. Aquarius, the opera that he composed during the last 10 years of his life, can not be missed in this overview. Finally, Mark Delaere summarizes some of the lines that characterize Goeyvaerts' complete oeuvre, such as the concept of static music and the importance of the number 7.

Prior to the lecture you can attend the concert of Ensemble XXI, led by Frank Agsteribbe. They will bring works by Karel Goeyvaerts.
