Steven Prengels

Steven Prengels graduated in 2009 as Master of Composition at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in the class of Wim Henderickx, with whom he also obtained a Master of Composition at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in 2007. Before that he studied at the Lemmens Institute and the KU Leuven. His work covers a wide range of artistic domains: from music for orchestra, theater, dance to visual arts.

His work has been performed by the Belgian Chamber Philharmonic, Brussels Philharmonic, deFilharmonie, the Spectra Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam, Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen, i Solisti del Vento, Oxalys and the Zagreb Symphony Orchestra, among others.

In the theater and dance world he works mainly as a musical director and composer. An important moment in this was the performance 'Gardenia' (2010), by Alain Platel and Frank Van Laecke, for which he designed the musical concept. This was followed by 'C(H)ŒURS' (2012), the large-scale production by Alain Platel, Les Ballets C de la B and Teatro Real Madrid, with large choir, orchestra and ten dancers, for which he created additional music and soundscapes alongside the works of Wagner and Verdi, and Platel's 'tauberbach' which premiered at the Münchner Kammerspiele in January 2014.

Next came Accattone (2015, Ruhrtriennale, NTGent, directed by Johan Simons), En Avant, Marche! (2015, les ballets C de la B, NTGent, directed by Alain Platel and Frank Van Laecke), nicht schlafen (2016, les ballets C de la B, Ruhrtriennale, directed by Alain Platel) and Mein Gent (les ballets C de la B, Vooruit, directed by Alain Platel and Frank Van Laecke).

As a visual artist, his work spans paintings, graphics, installations and objects. He exhibits regularly.

For the coming years, collaborations are planned with, among others, Alain Platel, Frank Van Laecke, les ballets C de la B, Johan Simons, Schauspielhaus Leipzig, Schauspielhaus Bochum, Manchester Festival and Epidaurus Festival.
