Informed Phrasing is a research project that combines views and techniques of the Schenkerian method of music analysis with principles and approaches of music cognition. This incorporates the Temporal Gestalt perception and the Generative theory of tonal music in order to inform musical performance of western (mostly tonal) music. Hence the project aspires to incorporate deep structural thinking into the practice of musical performance.
Informed Phrasing recognizes the opportunities that deep analytical inquiries offer the musical performer, yet acknowledges the performer's difficulties to include this in his practice. Therefore, one of the main purposes of the research is to establish a performative method to inform musical performance.
