Submit a research proposal to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp

For two-year projects starting on 20 September 2027



- STEP 1 → apply for your project before 3 November 2026 (12:00 - noon)
Use the Expression of Interest form and send it to research_royalacademyantwerp@ap.be 
We will let you know no later than end November 2026 whether you can further develop and submit your project dossier (STEP 2).

- STEP 2 → submit your dossier before 1 February 2027 (12:00 - noon)
Use the application form for two-year projects.


The call applies to proposals for two-year research projects

Two-year research projects provide for 55% employment for the research assignment over 24 months (as a contractual project staff member at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, AP University of Applied Sciences and Arts), plus €2,000 in operating funds (€1,000 per project year).

Procedure

- Apply for your project before 3 November 2026 (12:00 - noon) via the Expression of Interest form (see above)
- We will let you know no later than end November 2026 whether you can further develop and submit your project proposal in collaboration with one of our research groups.
- If selected for further development, we expect your final dossier (via the application form, see above) no later than 1 February 2027, 12:00 (noon), via 1 PDF file, per e-mail to research_royalacademyantwerp@ap.be
- The Head of Research checks whether the submission process had been duly observed and whether the submitted project applications conform to the formal rules of the call (cf. art. 16 of the regulations).
- The Research Board of Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp - Royal Conservatoire Antwerp is consulted concerning the relevance of the applications to the joint research policy of the Schools of Arts. Only projects that are found to be relevant by the Research Board will be presented for further evaluation to a reading committee.
- The relevant project proposals will be evaluated and ranked by an independent reading committee. The reading committee makes a ranking of the applications per project type. These rankings will serve as an advice to the Research Board and the Councils of the Schools of Arts, deciding on the acceptance and start-up of research projects.
- The aim is to conclude the evaluation and acceptance procedure in May 2027. Projects can start at the earliest 20 September 2027.
- A detailed description of the procedure is to be found in the regulations, article 17.


Preconditions

- The proposal should be in line with, endorse and further develop the mission/vision of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.
- The applicant is in the possibility to be legally employed by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp/AP Hogeschool in a contractual engagement.
- The applicant must, at the time of application, hold a Master’s degree in Visual Arts awarded by a Belgian higher education institution. You must add your diploma to your application file (in step 2).
- Applying for a research position with a degree awarded by a non-Belgian educational institution is only possible if this diploma has been validated or recognised through the NARIC procedure. In that case, you must include proof of this in your application file (in step 2), or declare your willingness to undergo this procedure.
